How does Vitiligo develop?
Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition and can develop on any part of the body. It can strike both the sexes and at any age yet it is believed that exposed parts of body have higher chances of developing Vitiligo. The beginning of Vitiligo and the severity of pigment loss differs with each patient. Color of skin does not affect the probability of getting Vitiligo however it is more visible in dark skin people. As Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder, its patients are monitored for other autoimmune diseases such as thyroid disorders, alopecia areata, etc. The genetic pre-deposition is also suspected for the disease development.Is Vitiligo at all contagious?
Vitiligo disease is a cosmetic disability that is definitely not contagious. Vitiligo is a result of immune response to the cells that make color but it certainly donot spread by touching. Unfortunately, misconceptions like this often mean that a patient may find themselves a victim of discrimination and are often driven to the depths of despair. It is not something you can catch or pass on. However genetics are some times considered as a reason for Vitiligo, but this is not true for all cases.Who is affected by Vitiligo?
Vitiligo disease affects all ethnic groups with the same frequency regardless of race or gender. Ninety-five percent of people who have Vitiligo develop it before their 40th birthday, mostly in young age between the ages of 10 and 30. Although Vitiligo can not be diagnosed before time, as Vitiligo causes are still unknown but the theories of Vitiligo causes suspect people with auto-immune disease, or some one going through mental and emotional stress for Vitiligo. Also the genetics are pre-dominant cause for the occurrence of white patches of Vitiligo.If I am pregnant and have Vitiligo, will my child develop Vitiligo?
No this not mandatory, the Vitiligo causes are not confirmed yet but there are many theories about what causes Vitiligo, many experts believe, and data supports the theory, that one must be genetically susceptible, in order to develop but the recent studies tell us that about 80% of patients report no other family members with Vitiligo. Many experts agree that not everyone who is susceptible to Vitiligo will necessarily develop it. So there is no way yet, to tell if your child will or will not suffer from Vitiligo.How does Vitiligo progress?
Vitiligo can appear at any age irrespective of gender. It frequently begins with a rapid loss of pigment which may be followed by a long period of time when the skin color does not change. Later, the pigment loss may resume perhaps after the individual has suffered physical trauma or stress. The loss of skin pigmentation may continue until, for unknown reasons, the process stops. Cycles of pigment loss, followed by periods of stability may continue indefinitely.
